1717 isn’t a just a place or a house number. It’s a feeling that was created and fostered by Maurice and Hazel Glenn over decades as they watched their 11 children grow to be part of the larger Des Moines community. A feeling of family and friendship, where as children you could play kick-the-can in the front yard or sit at the dinner table and devour Maury’s fried bread, or as adults you could share a beer and a joke on the porch.1717 Brewing Company, started by three of the Glenn boys-Jerry, Phil, and Matt-is a tribute to their parents and what they built. Even their phone number is the same one the house used for over 40 years. Next time you’re in the neighborhood, come on by the house. We’ve got beer.
— The 1717 Brewcast —
Phil has close to 30 years of experience in both the medical and beer drinking fields. He first home brewed in 2002, and assures us his beer has gotten much better since then. He has four kids, but his first love is the Parent Trap remake starring Lindsay Lohan. If you can stump him on a question regarding the movie, he may just give you a discount on your next beer.

Matt is the youngest out of the 11 Glenn kids, but if you ask him, they definitely saved the dopest for last. In the early 2000s, his life changed when he moved to Colorado and was able to experience the craft beer boom firsthand, which inspired him to begin creating his own brew. He has a wife and kids, but the best day of his life will be the one in which he can quit his job and start brewing full-time.

Jerry has clowns to the left of him and jokers to the right as the middle Glenn child. As a successful small business owner, Jerry knows what it takes to make an impact on the local scene. A self-proclaimed “wine guy,” thanks to Matt and Phil, he’s starting to drink more than your everyday domestic pilsner. You can catch him making puns very quietly on each episode of the 1717 Brewcast.
